Hoping this treatment is almost over.

It's been over a month since Martin has been taking this rat poison treatment, alongside of his normal chemotherapy. It was supposed to have been over by now. A few days ago, we received some new results that showed that this treatment wasn't working, and that he would have to continue it through for at least another week.

It has been a long week....continuing to take something that you know hasn't worked yet is harder than taking something that you know is working. The side effects were also getting very uncomfortable, almost unbearable. On Thursday, martin had an unplanned meeting with the doctor, and learned that uncomfortable side effects were from the combination of two chemo therapies. Thankfully, as a result Martin 'only' has to take the poison treatment, no more morning and evening chemo pills. These past two or three days have been much more pleasant. We even went for a short walk with some good friends, Nina and Andre yesterday in Stromovka. I didn't think that would be possible at the beginning of the week!

But tomorrow, Monday, he will have a blood and a bone marrow test and we will see what the next step is. Hopefully, the numbers will show no bad cells and we can have a nice long rest from any kind of aggressive treatment. At this point, I have no idea what will happen if the results remain the same as this last week. I guess either continue this treatment, or something else.

I am trying to stay cool about it, but it's not easy. Martin isn't feeling well tonight. I think all of us, including the girls are a bit on edge. It is snowing so quietly and beautifully outside. I'm trying to wait just as peacefully.

If you have a few moments to think of us and talk to God on our behalf, ask Him for peace, real rest and patience. And not to lose hope, regardless of the results tomorrow.

We'll keep you posted. Thanks for EVERYTHING!!

Budeme vás informovat. Díky za VŠECHNO !!!

Thank you Filip Šimáček for the translation.

Acceptance

If I had to title this last month, it would be 'Acceptance'. Acceptance at gunpoint, maybe? Parts of this month have been terrible, but I can say that I am glad for my heart to have been taken on this road. It was time. If I could have chosen how it would have happened, I would have preferred to have go through this at my own pace, during some quiet moments with the Lord, maybe in the mountains or at the beach, reading a book about it or some scripture. Those would have been my plans...

Takové by byly mé představy.

A few days ago we passed the one year mark of Martin's diagnosis. A year ago, I started this blog to share our story with cancer. This past Friday, 30 Nov, Martin and I really didn't know whether to joke about it, celebrate it or cry. So we did all three. We laughed about it with our dear friends Mikey and Monika, celebrated the victory of surviving a year, and cried that it feels like it will never end.

A month ago, it felt differently. It seemed like we could live fine, relatively normal, lives with Leukemia. That it was 'ending'. We were all, especially Martin, feeling well. Our thoughts and prayers were going fast in every other direction far from sickness- friends, ministry, the future, our girls...normal life things.

Then with one phone call, God brought our thoughts and prayers, our hearts back into painful focus. Martin is still sick. I don't know why that reality hurts differently this time. It's been a year. Should I have been more prepared? On guard? Could we have been?

Jedním telefonátem nám Bůh naše myšlenky a modlitby přivedl zpět do bolestivé soustředěnosti. Martin je stále nemocný. Nevím jestli tato realita bolí jinak než předtím. Byl to rok.  Měla jsem být více připravena?  Více na pozoru?

I look back to last year and can remember the sheer adrenaline (result of millions of prayers) that got me through last December. Honestly, it is with exhaustion and heaviness that I sit and accept (or try to accept) all of this. Overwhelmed, extremely emotional and numb at the same time. Did I say tired?

Pohlcena, extrémně emocionální a zároveň znecitlivělá. Zmínila jsem unavená?

Martin has been the hero for taking this horrendous intensive treatment EVERY DAY. He physically has to sit and accept it. Accept that he is sick and receive the poison. I see the effects of it on him and the battle going on inside of him every morning. Not going is never an option, but it never gets easier to leave. He was really ill the first week, then had an OK second week and now he is really weak. He has 7 more days. Hopefully, whatever comes next does not include this treatment or going to the hospital so much.

Má ještě sedm dnů do konce.

I think I would have said a bit ago that we were 'getting used to it (cancer)'. In my mind, that was acceptance. But now I disagree with myself. 'Getting used to it' could be avoiding it, minimizing it, forgetting it, hoping it would die without attention....like all the herbs I planted in May.

Tonight, acceptance means to me holding the truth in my hands, looking at it, feeling the weight of it, talking about it to God using nice and not so nice words, and trying to reach the place of honestly being able to say that with whatever circumstance I am holding, ' It is well with my soul'. That because of Jesus Christ, the gift of God's love is so much greater than whatever is in my hands. It sounds absolutely crazy- even to someone who has heard it a million times. That it is possible to accept Martin's illness and receive perfect love of God at the same time....and have joy. The joy trumps the tears, and maybe is even magnified through them.

I'm definitely not there yet. But I am walking in that direction, together with God.
Here are a few snapshots of this journey for me these past few weeks:

*Kathy Usrey gave me a big hug, and told me, 'It will be ok'.

For those of you who don't know Kathy and Tiffany, let me take a moment and introduce you. Their family (Kathy and David and two of their children, Tiffany and David Jr.) moved to Paris a long time ago, maybe 9 years ago, to work with young international and French teenagers with Young Life.  I have had the privilege to get to know them- they have always been extraordinarily beautiful ladies.
A few years ago, a brain tumor was found in David Usrey, Kathy's husband. After surgeries and treatments, times when it seemed like he was going to be fine, a long fight with cancer, David passed away last March. March is only 8 months ago.

Kathy Usrey mě objala a řekla „Bude to v pořádku.“

Kathy and her daughter Tiffany (25 years old?) came to join our YL European conference two weeks ago, and stayed to be the speaker for our womens' retreat following the conference.  For several months, I knew they were coming. I couldn't wait to be with them and was terrified at the same time. I didn't know what they would really be like- would they be angry? Sad? A mess?

The minute they walked in the door, and I looked into Kathy's eyes, I wept. She and Tiffany were radiant. They would probably say 'yes', they have been angry, sad and a mess at times.
Kathy Usrey gave me a big hug and told me, 'It will be ok'.  If the absolutely worst happens (i can't type it) it. will. be. ok.  Not because Martin will be fine and everything will be better, and this will be behind us....but because of Jesus. And I saw that this IN Kathy and Tiffany. I got to spend a lot of time with them- and literally have pages journaled about our time together.

Ona i Tiffany byly veselé. Možná by řekly „ano“ v tom čase byly rozzlobené, smutné a rozervané. Kathy Usrey mě obejmula a řekla mi „Bude to v pořádku“.

*Tiffany Usrey led us in worship. I cannot begin to tell you how hearing her praise and thank God challenged and blessed me.

Tiffany Usrey nás vedla v chválách. Nemohu ani popsat jak mě její hlas a písně díky Bohu povzbudily.

*Kathy also said this sentence: The fear is worse than the reality. I could talk about this for a long time, but I will just say that this makes me angry at fear and once again thankful for the steadfast love of Jesus.

*My mind really for the first time has go to the 'worst case scenario place' and stayed there long enough to feel it.

*I have little warrior girls, who are so strong and sensitive at the same time. Sofia and Mia continue to amaze me with their understanding and concern and response to all of this.

*MY PARENTS WERE HERE FOR A MONTH!!! They had already planned to be here in November because of our conferences and childcare. Perfect timing. They served us, loved us, loved the girls, cared for us, lifted so many burdens during their visit....in practical ways and emotional ways.
Here's an example of a specific way: Martin felt better travelling home with someone on the metro,so on days when I couldn't go with him, my father would meet him at Karlovo Namesti and for some fresh air, they would walk across the river to Andel (15 minutes) and come home. It was perfect.  Thank you, Mom and Dad!!!!!!

Děkuji, mami a tati!

*There are few songs that are meaningful to my heart these days. These words and this truth are so precious to me right now

O Love that will not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.
O light that foll’west all my way,
I yield my flick’ring torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.
O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.
O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.

One last thing, I hope this doesn't sound depressing. Martin still may be fine. He probably will be and of course that would be amazing. I can't wait to celebrate years to come. It's just in my own walk with this that I am in this acceptance phase. Can't wait to move into party phase.

Thank you so much for making it through this post. We don't go a day without being so very thankful for the love, prayers and support we receive from so many of you.

Chtěla bych vám moc poděkovat za přečtení tohoto příspěvku. Není den, kdy bychom nebyli vděční za všechnu tu lásku, modlitby a podporu, kterou od Vás mnohých přijímáme.

Thank you so much Veronika Kristufova for the translation of this super long post!

Note from Martin

It was an ordinary Thursday morning (8.11.). All, except one thing. We had a special guest and I was looking forward to go for a short walk through Prague remembering the times I spent together with McKnights when they used to live here in the Czech Republic and founded a church in Ricany. The day was planned and I just wanted to do some more planning for the weekend and the next week because we needed babysitting during the European YL conference. I was in a good mood, tests results from 5.11. seemed to turned out well! I just felt good in general.
I was supposed to start another round of chemotherapy in pills the next day (Friday) which I had been taking for several months. The everyday life was slowly starting to get normal again.

My mobile phone rang and the the number seemed like one from some marketing research. But instead it was my doctor calling and sadly he had some bad news. They found some "ill" cells in my blood test and so I will have to attend more blood tests and then another aggressive chemotherapy for 30 days. What does it actually mean? It took us a while to admit that this is a relapse. Suddenly, after 10 months with good blood and bone marrow tests results, the leukemia has returned.

Recidiva - kdyz to prijde zpatky..
Sice nejsem v nemocnici a muzu si uzivat "rodinneho prostredi", ale krome navstevy nemocnice a prijezdu domu, nic moc dalsiho nedavam. Nejsou sily.

A Relapse - when it´s back...
Arsenic chemotherapy is the  most difficult treatment which I´ve been through for last 12 months. As Jane mentioned before, it really is a rat poison and I´m getting it into my body everyday for an hour for 30 days.  I was in pain for the first three days but step by step my body was getting used to it. Every second or third day I‘m in pain and after chemotherapy I sleep for the rest of the day. From the beggining of November, I have skipped all my duties and things that used to bring me joy and I am 100% a pacient  again. I am not in a hospital and can enjoy being with my family but I am not able to do anything else than visit the hospital and return back home. I’m out of strength.

Psychicky mam prozatim sil dost. Mam motivaci, hlava to zatim dava.

Mentally, I still have enough strength. I have motivation. I am swimming with my head above water. Sometimes, it all just falls on me and it´s difficult to imagine that I still have 10 more days of this muck chemo ahead of me. Now I understand why are some patients feel ill
when they hear the name of the metro stop "Karlovo namesti" where the hospital is. I always try to delay leaving the house to go to the hospitál, at least for a few minutes and I really hate getting off the subway when I arrive to Karlovo namesti. There is a big defference in comparison to other medical treatments I’ve been through. In the past I used to know that after 4 doses I would be free again for a month, I would just take some pills. But now it repeats every single day incuding weekends and I really don´t want to go through this again. But, at the same time I know it is good for me so I keep going there every day.

Neumim si predstavit a ani nechci domyslet, jakym utrpenim prochazi ti, kdo okolo sebe nemaji rodinu, pratele, a kamarady, kteri je podporuji. Beru to jako Bozi dar, ktery ma obrovskou hodnotu a neda se nicim nahradit.

I´ve heard that people who went through suffer and pain have a different view not just on their own life but also on their relationship with God. I don´t feel the need to be exaggeratedly religious or to blame God with the questions like "Why?!" I can´t lenghten my life even for one day. I can hardly describe to you how much support I have received from those close to me...even if they are far. I can´t imagine how terrible it must be for someone who has no family and friends. I take this as a very valuable and irreplaceble gift from God.

Dobre okolnosti me provazely cely zivot a nemam na co si stezovat. Muj zivot je spojen s Kristem - to on me pozval skrze svoji obet a smrt do Boziho kralovstvi.  Je to paradox, ze i ono dlouhe a prozatim nekoncici udoli ma prichut nebe - je mistem kde vladne milujici Buh.
Good circumstances accompanied me through my whole life and I have no reason to complain. I was already free from demanding God´s favour the moment I got the message about a relapse. I receive the grace to free myself from my false identity built on what I´m doing and not doing; my desire for achievement and victory. I´m free from demanding good health and good physical condition. My life is connected to Christ - he is the one who invited me through his sacrifice and death to God´s kingdom. It is a paradox that this long and (for now) not ending valley has a flavour of heaven - it is a place where the loving God rules.

It has been six days since Martin has started this new intense round of treatment. Once again, it feels like just one big super long never ending day.
Just to post a quick health update and to fill in some more information about his treatment- the doctors have told us not to panic. In his last bone marrow test, they found a small amount of the cancer cells 'hiding', so they are being cautious and careful to clear them out of Martin's body.
So that means he must go to the hospital everyday to take in something that kills the cancer cells.
Takže to znamená, že musí chodit do nemocnice každý den, aby dostal něco,co zabíjí rakovinné buňky.
The more I think about this and go over it again and again in my head, I can see a few pieces of good news. They found the cells. They know how to kill them. There are just a small amount of them. And lastly and the most mysterious, when I can move my thoughts from my self, my worry and my fear, I have actually experienced life and peace. Thanks to the Lord.
Čím více nad tím přemýšlím, a promítám si to v hlavě stále a stále dokola. Jsem schopná vidět pár dobrých zpráv. Našli ty buňky. Ví jak je zničit. Je jich jen málo. A konečně a to nejvíce záhadné, když můžu odprostit svoje myšlenky od sebe, problémů a strachu, skutečně jsem zažila život a pokoj. Díky Pánu Bohu.
Today for sixth time he has received this treatment. 24 more days to go. The first two or three days were just terrible. I mean, ones that I want so badly to forget. It never gets easier seeing someone you love so sick. Since then, he's started to feel more and more relief and his body is getting 'used to it'.

This is the routine of this week: when the girls and I got up and got ready for preschool, Martin was still fighting the headache, taking a few ibuprofens.. He felt a lot of pain behind his eyes, which was something he never experienced before. By the time I got home from the morning school drop-off, he was feeling a little better, well enough to eat breakfast and start getting ready for the hospital. He is to be at hospital around 10, the treatment takes about 1 hour of slow dripping of the juice into his system. By 11:15 he was leaving for home, feeling nauseous and little dizzy.. The walk over the bridge, fresh air, wind or sun - being outside is giving him extra energy before getting on the metro.. Some days were better than others. After a couple of hours he gets tired and sleeps for the rest of the afternoon before the girls show up and have lots to share with daddy about their day.. Yesterday and today, he was able to stay awake past 7.30pm!!!

And one last comment - all of this is happening as he is on his scheduled chemotherapy with pills that he takes in the morning and in the evening. He measures life differently now, resigned from ALL responsibilities to be able to rest and eliminate any un-necessary stress. He is at peace, keeping the head above the water, thankful that the pain is manageable by more pills, and enjoying MINUTES or hours with no pain.

There is actually ALOT that I can't wait to share from these past few days, especially about all the ways God has cared for and supported us.... but I want to get this quick update up first. For all of the love and prayers, we cannot say 'Thank you' enough!

Thank you SO much Nikola Bartonkova!!!!!!!!

(same post from yesterday, 9 Nov, but with translation)

A relapse.

I was trying to think of a clever way to start this blog post, but can't. We have had a nice, quiet, long summer of 'no new is good news', when it comes to Martin's health. I have have wanted to start posting again, but haven't quite known how.

Recidiva

We have been living in the tension of sickness and health- with mostly good days for Martin. But having to remember that even though he was feeling better, we are still on a long marathon journey...feeling the tension between enjoying the moment and remembering the reality. Maybe later I will share more about this.

Yesterday, he was feeling OK. Life was in full motion for our family.
But tonight, it has stopped. I'm sad to say that that I don't have to 'remember' that Martin is sick. I just have to turn the corner and see. He is so sick.

The doctor called yesterday and said that he had some bad results to his regular blood work. He's had a relapse. Today he's started another intense circle of really strong chemotherapy. He is able to be an outpatient, but has to go in every morning for at least two weeks for and IV of glorified rat poisoning. Literally, that is what it is. There should be a Mr. Yuck sticker on the stuff they are putting in him.

Včera volal doktor a oznámil nám, že výsledky Martinových pravidelných krevních testů jsou špatné. Nastala recidiva.

Today after his first injection, we took a nice long walk together from Karlovo Namesti to Mala Strana to meet my parents for lunch. He still seemed well and I was hopeful. This isn't so bad. Within a few hours, we returned home and I am brought right back to a very familiar place. Overwhelmed. Scared. Trying to care for Martin who is so very sick tonight. Trying to remember our walk across the bridge today. Trying to remember what I was reminded of yesterday by two special friends, that the Lord says,  'I will help you,' 'I will defend you,' 'I will never leave you,' I want to be close to you,' 'I am the Lord.' That He will be and do those things for Martin. Tonight.

Please, if you pray, please pray for Martin and for these next two or three weeks. So many of our past updates (not on this blog, but in person) have been so positive, and so much more fun to share, that I really hesitate to post this. But I know it's important. It is such a gift to be connected to you all.

thank you Klára Fleková

Note from Martin

Mili pratele,

dekuji za Vas zajem o muj zdravotni stav a modlitby, kterymi me provazite celou dobu me nemoci.

Dear friends,
Thank you so much for your interest in the state of my health and for your prayers that have been with me through the whole time I have been sick.

The last few weeks have been filled with mixed emotions. On the one hand I feel in very good shape and at ease physically, well of course talking from the point of view of a patient of the IHBT (Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion).
At my last medical check I was hoping that the doctor would pronounce me well enough to go back to work from the 1st of June. Even though I work a bit every day already I thought that I was now in good enough condition to start working full time again.

This turned out to be an incorrect assumption. My doctor didn’t share my enthusiasm about getting back to work quickly. On the other hand he was pleased to see how I am trying to reintegrate into normal life as much as possible.

The result is that I am still on sick leave. Once I slowed down and stopped working so much the consequences became evident... Immediately the tiredness, which I had been staving off for several weeks, set in, as well as sore muscles from overuse, etc. I had to slow down, get back into regular times of rest and saying no to various projects and activities unfortunately became a daily routine too…

Because I am in between chemotherapies, my blood results are enabling me to go for different check ups that had to be postponed because of the treatment. My appointment at the dentist, where I was expecting hours of drilling, extraction and I don’t know what else took 11 minutes and I left the office in a great mood. The other two check ups didn’t go as well.

Dalsi vysetreni me ceka v pristich tydnech a pote se rozhodne co dal.

The optometrist that I went to see with some allergy related issues told me after a few tests that he would not worry about the allergy too much but that they’d discovered a bigger problem – glaucoma. Once the diagnosis is definite it will mean the unavoidable start of use of eye drops or pills for the rest of my life so there will be more tests to follow to determine how soon I need to begin taking the medication that will slow the process down. The tests are scheduled for the next few weeks and then they’ll decide how to proceed.

I went to see the dermatologist with a little cut on my face that I got while shaving about a year or more ago. It turned out that this cut had never healed and because the scab often came off it transformed into some kind of “mild” cancer. Because my blood work shows my blood is now almost at the same level as a healthy person, it can be surgically removed. The results from histology will tell what comes next. I am going in for a minor surgical procedure on Monday, June 11 and I will know more two weeks after that.

Tolik k memu zdravotnimu stavu.

That was all about my health. Then there is also my spiritual life that is deeply affected by this experience. I think that the following sentence sums it up best: I am not grateful for the leukemia itself, but I am very grateful for the time I can spend with God, Jane and the family, with friends and with all of you, who are standing with us in this battle. God continues to lead me through new things that are demolishing my notions of my identity outside of his kingdom and my ties with the world around me that are a personal obstacle to a deeper following of Christ.

I am not afraid of death, but I am afraid of the long process of dying. I am realizing there are many things that I would like to be present at, live through fully, see with my own eyes and play a part in. God doesn’t owe me any of this so I am again trying to learn this new reality where I want to follow him anywhere in whatever condition he will let me get there. As it is a blessing to have plenty and an abundance it is a blessing “not to have” and to be free to go wherever God is calling you. My vision is a gift that I can enjoy for a few years or decades. God is the only one who knows how and when my body will fall apart entirely and turn back to dust.

My hope for fullness and joy of life is in God. The rest are gifts that I was taking for granted and always wanted the best of. After a 6-month marathon in the hospital environment I am standing at the threshold of a new gratitude to God where every step is a gift and every moment counts. I am breaking free from comparing myself to others, competing with others or challenging them - trying to see who is better. I am very grateful for my new life in Christ that I have been living the past 6 months. Please don’t stop praying for God’s guidance in my life and my obedience to be his servant right there where he wants to have me.

V Kristu,

Martin

In Christ,

Martin
