It has been six days since Martin has started this new intense round of treatment. Once again, it feels like just one big super long never ending day.
Just to post a quick health update and to fill in some more information about his treatment- the doctors have told us not to panic. In his last bone marrow test, they found a small amount of the cancer cells 'hiding', so they are being cautious and careful to clear them out of Martin's body.
So that means he must go to the hospital everyday to take in something that kills the cancer cells.
Takže to znamená, že musí chodit do nemocnice každý den, aby dostal něco,co zabíjí rakovinné buňky.
The more I think about this and go over it again and again in my head, I can see a few pieces of good news. They found the cells. They know how to kill them. There are just a small amount of them. And lastly and the most mysterious, when I can move my thoughts from my self, my worry and my fear, I have actually experienced life and peace. Thanks to the Lord.
Čím více nad tím přemýšlím, a promítám si to v hlavě stále a stále dokola. Jsem schopná vidět pár dobrých zpráv. Našli ty buňky. Ví jak je zničit. Je jich jen málo. A konečně a to nejvíce záhadné, když můžu odprostit svoje myšlenky od sebe, problémů a strachu, skutečně jsem zažila život a pokoj. Díky Pánu Bohu.
Today for sixth time he has received this treatment. 24 more days to go. The first two or three days were just terrible. I mean, ones that I want so badly to forget. It never gets easier seeing someone you love so sick. Since then, he's started to feel more and more relief and his body is getting 'used to it'.

This is the routine of this week: when the girls and I got up and got ready for preschool, Martin was still fighting the headache, taking a few ibuprofens.. He felt a lot of pain behind his eyes, which was something he never experienced before. By the time I got home from the morning school drop-off, he was feeling a little better, well enough to eat breakfast and start getting ready for the hospital. He is to be at hospital around 10, the treatment takes about 1 hour of slow dripping of the juice into his system. By 11:15 he was leaving for home, feeling nauseous and little dizzy.. The walk over the bridge, fresh air, wind or sun - being outside is giving him extra energy before getting on the metro.. Some days were better than others. After a couple of hours he gets tired and sleeps for the rest of the afternoon before the girls show up and have lots to share with daddy about their day.. Yesterday and today, he was able to stay awake past 7.30pm!!!

And one last comment - all of this is happening as he is on his scheduled chemotherapy with pills that he takes in the morning and in the evening. He measures life differently now, resigned from ALL responsibilities to be able to rest and eliminate any un-necessary stress. He is at peace, keeping the head above the water, thankful that the pain is manageable by more pills, and enjoying MINUTES or hours with no pain.

There is actually ALOT that I can't wait to share from these past few days, especially about all the ways God has cared for and supported us.... but I want to get this quick update up first. For all of the love and prayers, we cannot say 'Thank you' enough!

Thank you SO much Nikola Bartonkova!!!!!!!!

(same post from yesterday, 9 Nov, but with translation)

A relapse.

I was trying to think of a clever way to start this blog post, but can't. We have had a nice, quiet, long summer of 'no new is good news', when it comes to Martin's health. I have have wanted to start posting again, but haven't quite known how.

Recidiva

We have been living in the tension of sickness and health- with mostly good days for Martin. But having to remember that even though he was feeling better, we are still on a long marathon journey...feeling the tension between enjoying the moment and remembering the reality. Maybe later I will share more about this.

Yesterday, he was feeling OK. Life was in full motion for our family.
But tonight, it has stopped. I'm sad to say that that I don't have to 'remember' that Martin is sick. I just have to turn the corner and see. He is so sick.

The doctor called yesterday and said that he had some bad results to his regular blood work. He's had a relapse. Today he's started another intense circle of really strong chemotherapy. He is able to be an outpatient, but has to go in every morning for at least two weeks for and IV of glorified rat poisoning. Literally, that is what it is. There should be a Mr. Yuck sticker on the stuff they are putting in him.

Včera volal doktor a oznámil nám, že výsledky Martinových pravidelných krevních testů jsou špatné. Nastala recidiva.

Today after his first injection, we took a nice long walk together from Karlovo Namesti to Mala Strana to meet my parents for lunch. He still seemed well and I was hopeful. This isn't so bad. Within a few hours, we returned home and I am brought right back to a very familiar place. Overwhelmed. Scared. Trying to care for Martin who is so very sick tonight. Trying to remember our walk across the bridge today. Trying to remember what I was reminded of yesterday by two special friends, that the Lord says,  'I will help you,' 'I will defend you,' 'I will never leave you,' I want to be close to you,' 'I am the Lord.' That He will be and do those things for Martin. Tonight.

Please, if you pray, please pray for Martin and for these next two or three weeks. So many of our past updates (not on this blog, but in person) have been so positive, and so much more fun to share, that I really hesitate to post this. But I know it's important. It is such a gift to be connected to you all.

Note from Martin

Mili pratele,

dekuji za Vas zajem o muj zdravotni stav a modlitby, kterymi me provazite celou dobu me nemoci.

Dear friends,
Thank you so much for your interest in the state of my health and for your prayers that have been with me through the whole time I have been sick.

The last few weeks have been filled with mixed emotions. On the one hand I feel in very good shape and at ease physically, well of course talking from the point of view of a patient of the IHBT (Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion).
At my last medical check I was hoping that the doctor would pronounce me well enough to go back to work from the 1st of June. Even though I work a bit every day already I thought that I was now in good enough condition to start working full time again.

This turned out to be an incorrect assumption. My doctor didn’t share my enthusiasm about getting back to work quickly. On the other hand he was pleased to see how I am trying to reintegrate into normal life as much as possible.

The result is that I am still on sick leave. Once I slowed down and stopped working so much the consequences became evident... Immediately the tiredness, which I had been staving off for several weeks, set in, as well as sore muscles from overuse, etc. I had to slow down, get back into regular times of rest and saying no to various projects and activities unfortunately became a daily routine too…

Because I am in between chemotherapies, my blood results are enabling me to go for different check ups that had to be postponed because of the treatment. My appointment at the dentist, where I was expecting hours of drilling, extraction and I don’t know what else took 11 minutes and I left the office in a great mood. The other two check ups didn’t go as well.

Dalsi vysetreni me ceka v pristich tydnech a pote se rozhodne co dal.

The optometrist that I went to see with some allergy related issues told me after a few tests that he would not worry about the allergy too much but that they’d discovered a bigger problem – glaucoma. Once the diagnosis is definite it will mean the unavoidable start of use of eye drops or pills for the rest of my life so there will be more tests to follow to determine how soon I need to begin taking the medication that will slow the process down. The tests are scheduled for the next few weeks and then they’ll decide how to proceed.

I went to see the dermatologist with a little cut on my face that I got while shaving about a year or more ago. It turned out that this cut had never healed and because the scab often came off it transformed into some kind of “mild” cancer. Because my blood work shows my blood is now almost at the same level as a healthy person, it can be surgically removed. The results from histology will tell what comes next. I am going in for a minor surgical procedure on Monday, June 11 and I will know more two weeks after that.

Tolik k memu zdravotnimu stavu.

That was all about my health. Then there is also my spiritual life that is deeply affected by this experience. I think that the following sentence sums it up best: I am not grateful for the leukemia itself, but I am very grateful for the time I can spend with God, Jane and the family, with friends and with all of you, who are standing with us in this battle. God continues to lead me through new things that are demolishing my notions of my identity outside of his kingdom and my ties with the world around me that are a personal obstacle to a deeper following of Christ.

I am not afraid of death, but I am afraid of the long process of dying. I am realizing there are many things that I would like to be present at, live through fully, see with my own eyes and play a part in. God doesn’t owe me any of this so I am again trying to learn this new reality where I want to follow him anywhere in whatever condition he will let me get there. As it is a blessing to have plenty and an abundance it is a blessing “not to have” and to be free to go wherever God is calling you. My vision is a gift that I can enjoy for a few years or decades. God is the only one who knows how and when my body will fall apart entirely and turn back to dust.

My hope for fullness and joy of life is in God. The rest are gifts that I was taking for granted and always wanted the best of. After a 6-month marathon in the hospital environment I am standing at the threshold of a new gratitude to God where every step is a gift and every moment counts. I am breaking free from comparing myself to others, competing with others or challenging them - trying to see who is better. I am very grateful for my new life in Christ that I have been living the past 6 months. Please don’t stop praying for God’s guidance in my life and my obedience to be his servant right there where he wants to have me.

V Kristu,

Martin

In Christ,

Martin

back to school :)

I have the privilege to teach English at two Zakladni skolas...with middle-school aged students. 'Teach' is a strong word; I play games and talk a lot and hope that in the midst of it all, students are more comfortable and more confident speaking English. I visit many many classes- in one school, I think I may see every 7th, 8th and 9th grader once a month.

Martin and I were connected to this one school in our neighborhood, Mladi, by our colleagues whose children went there. Martin has chaperoned several 'school of nature' (outdoor ed) trips and ski camps over the past 7 or 8 years. I have been teaching there for 4 years now- they have seen me through both pregnancies. Even though we are just visitors at Mladi, they have become kind of like a family.

I share this with you because last week, 8 March, I started teaching again. I was nervous. I don't know why. I knew the students and teachers would be great- I just didn't know how I would be. I didn't know if I could get excited about English or laugh at my dumb jokes or have the energy for it.

What I didn't realize before I went, was that it was the perfect first step to re-entering life. Why? I really genuinely felt like the school cares for Martin. Several teachers asked about him- not because they heard my husband was ill, but because they know him and care about him. A group of teachers gave me flowers. It was such a nice welcome back.

And in class I laughed. I really laughed. The classes I visited last week were hysterical. I didn't have to search or dig for energy or excitement or joy- it showed up. We played the normal stupid games. Nothing extraordinary. The students and teachers surely had no idea what that day meant to me.

If they happen to be reading this- thank you so very much for being a part of our family and for caring for us during this time.

It really means a lot to us. thank you!

Pokud si to náhodou budou
Skute
čně to pro nás hodně znamená. Děkujeme vám!

Thank you Klara Flekova for the translation!!!

the reminders. they are everywhere.

So maybe I am not as much of a blogger as I thought I was. Now that my last post was a month ago, I can't remember what it was like to share such details of our family so easily. I have been reflecting on this- and in all honestly, A LOT has changed between November 30 and today. Obviously, Martin is home. He isn't in constant pain. He looks great. The dust has settled from the initial trauma of the news. I have started teaching and learning and meeting with people again. We have really tried to start thinking and looking beyond cancer.... all of these are things I couldn't say in the beginning. However, many of the big things are the same, just affect us differently. I am reacting differently. Healing. Surviving. Living each new day in yet another new normal.

Reaguju jinak. Lečím se. Přežívám. Prožívám zase každý nový den jako běžnou realitu.

What is the same?

Martin still has Leukemia. There is something inside of him that could take his life. He continues to take a million pills each day, follow the doctors' orders and learn what that means for him on many levels. I am the healthy parent. Subconsciously, this is heaviness is one that I sometimes carry gracefully, but most often resist and want to fight. Maybe in the same way Martin wrestles with his illness. If you came over today for a visit, you would probably be shocked by how great Martin looks, how much energy he has and how we seem to doing pretty well. You would probably be so glad to see him playing with the girls and love to hear Sofia and Mia laughing and giggling. Maybe even better than normal? Believe me, it has felt SO SO good to visit with so many people these past weeks. Each person has energized us and encouraged us.

Co se nezměnilo?

Martin pořád Leukémii má. Má v sobě něco, co by mu mohlo vzít život. Každý člověk nám dodal energii a povzbuzení.

But I must share that at the end of the day or between visits, and when things are quiet- I really can still see it. I see the cancer in Martin. I can see how he has gathered energy from somewhere to be 'normal Martin', engaging, laughing, telling stories, being a gracious host- and then is empty. It is still there. I know Martin isn't trying to hide it, I mean his new haircut is an obvious reminder. But I see it in the exhale.

I see it in my kitchen. I used to have a baking shelf with jars of all the different kinds of flours they have here, sugars, salt, baking powder. Now they share the shelf with boxes and boxes of drugs. Another reminder that this is still a reality for our life.

Vidím to u nás v kuchyni.

As I wrote in the last post, we have heard that Martin will continue to receive treatment for two years. I am reminded of his cancer when I look ahead and want to make simple plans. A conference, a camp, trips, family weddings and reunions... We travel. We are in big groups. We sometimes are the ones gathering the groups. I am reminded of Martin's sickness when we want to start planning, but can't.

Konferenci, tábor, rodinné svatby a srazy. Cestujeme. Exitujeme ve velkých skupinách. Občas pořádáme velká setkání. Martinovu nemoc si připomenu vždy, když začnu něco plánovat a vím, že nemůžu.

The reminders are everywhere. I try not to see them. I try to get used to them . I can't.

How am I reacting differently? I am frustrated. so very frustrated. I want to break the glass ceiling. I want to cut the leash that is 'holding us back' with a machete. I want to scream at the top of my lungs at the tension we are living in right now. Recently we have just heard of too my stories of people in their journey with cancer- some who after years, are at rest with the Lord; some who are just beginning; some who are in remission. And I am very emotional about each one.

I know things in my heart and I know things in my head that got me through the first few months. I believe in God. I believe that he is familiar with sickness and suffering. I believe that he loves me and really, truly is with me. But I am frustrated because I don't have answers. I don't know why a friend of ours, an amazing man, with a truly beautiful wife with 2 daugthers, a son and grandchildren is gone to be with the Lord. I don't know what our little family is supposed to do now that we have experienced this; I don't want to slip back into being the way we were before. I don't know how to plan, how to be, what to do with this frustration. Other than scribble real hard with a black crayon, throw pillows and just ask God.

In reality, I don't know any less today; or I didn't know any more before Martin's diagnosis. I'm just forced to look at it, my 'unknowing', in the face and deal with it. Humbling.

This blog really was to keep you informed on Martin's health. I am mixing way more of our thoughts and other stuff into it that I had planned. Thanks for keeping up with us.

As for Martin, he last had a check up on Monday and all of his blood levels were 'good' enough to continue with the planned chemotherapy next week. It will be his last one! I know. It is amazing. He regularly visits Mykola, his first roommate in the hospital- their friendship is precious. Mykola and some of the other 'guys' felt good enough for a pizza on Sunday night. When Martin was in the hospital, that was a tradition they shared....sunday night pizza. So Martin was happy, honored and humbled to bring them pizza. Their stories and their pain and their complications are very real reminders to Martin (to us) of the power of prayer and God's mercy.

Please pray for Martin's upcoming and last round of chemo. The past round was 2x stronger than normal and this one should be back down to the normal doses. So relatively, it should be easier. But who really knows. Also, in April and May I have a few trips and am having a hard time deciding whether to go, for how long etc. I honestly don't know. Pray for wisdom.

And lastly, pray that all of these reminders of Leukemia that I shared about in this post would bring me to place of gratefulness, peace, and compassion and even lead me to pray more deeply for Martin and others.

* Please don't let what I shared about Martin being tired stop you from visiting! When Martin read this post, that was his first reaction. We have loved the shared meals, movies, amazing mozzarella from George, stories and times together. Come on over :)

for translation, thanks Irenka!!!!!!!!!!!!!
