Chemo round #2

Life with an outpatient is not only wonderful, but it is hard.

This week was Martin's second round of chemotherapy. It is hard to see someone you love get so much better and then get so much worse. This whole cancer thing is such a roller-coaster.

I don't understand it. I trust the doctors and I believe that the chemicals that are being given to Martin are killing whatever is making him sick- but in the meantime, all I see are the symptoms of what is supposed to be getting him better. I don't know if that even makes sense. It just seems so backwards.

Nevím, jestli to vůbec dává smysl. Prostě se to zdá tak naruby.

He went to the hospital every day this week, except Friday, to receive a dose. Monday he took a long nap in the middle of the day, which wasn't too abnormal. Then from after Tuesday's dose until now he has pretty much been in bed -either asleep or almost asleep for 24 hours a day. He is terribly uncomfortable. In some ways, this second round of chemo has been more difficult for him than the first. But I will let Martin tell you more about it...

Tento týden šel Martin každý den do nemocnice, aby dostal dávku.

I think I said in an earlier post that his 'spark' was back. Well, I have to say that this week's chemo has killed the spark. Now his body needs to fight for it back. Then once he's back up- then it's another round of chemo. What a vicious cycle.

It was much more fun and encouraging to see him just improve... to see him just get stronger.

If that was what this journey was going to be like- only upwards, then we misnamed this blog. As I reflect on the title Martin chose for this over a month ago, each word has a deeper meaning for me. I love how each word colors this experience.

Walking. I love that it is an action verb. It's dynamic but not dramatic. Distance, not sprint. Walking can be pleasant; it can be painful. It takes energy to move, to change position, to persevere and keep on walking.

Through. This reminds me that change is happening. There will be a different ending point than where we began. A journey. A process- one that is in us, or one that requires us. I imagine a certain determination or decision to go through something instead of around it. To go through the puddle, through the crowd, through whatever process might be nice to avoid, but somehow worth it.

Skrz. Tohle mi připomíná, že probíhá změna. Konec bude jiný než to, kde jsme začali. Cesta.

The valley. Who doesn't love mountains? I have so many memories on the tops of mountains all over the world. The satisfaction of reaching the top, the view, the air...it gets my heart beating just thinking about it. Also figurative mountain tops- where I felt deeply satisfied, free to breathe, with a momentary clear view and understanding of who I am and where I am. As great as those are, they are so short. Mountaintops are small; valleys can be big. They can be vast. They can be as dramatic, as spectacular as a mountain. They need each other- to provide the contrast, for the pause to make sense. I'm coming to love the valley and am deeply grateful that it is not a pit. It is a place of potential and of hope.

If you pray, please continue to pray that the Lord would walk before us, walk with us...through this very valley. That Martin would really be able to rest, heal and get stronger to keep walking together with the Lord. That we would have the energy to keep moving, keep changing and that we would continue to hope in something so much bigger than ourselves, bigger than cancer and medicine...

thank you!

thank you Hanka Novotna for the translation :)

  2. I'm blessed by your writing, Jane. This weekend it seemed that the words "walk" and "rest" were repeated in different Bible studies, sermons, or conversations. Thank you so much for sharing through this blog, it's so good to know how to pray. We're praying!!
