Holidays

This has not been a normal holiday season for us. But what is normal?
Overall, this holiday time has not felt like Christmas, for a lot of reasons related to and unrelated to cancer.

But I am holding on to a few crystal clear memories and moments that were so filled with the hope and the spirit of Christmas. One of those moments was at church. I had both girls with me; I was holding them near.  The Advent candles were lit (I don't remember which week it was). The room was beautifully and simply decorated. I can't even remember what song we were singing! But I clearly remember thinking Christmas is near. I felt the expectation and hope and potential of what was coming. God in the Flesh.

The other moment, was one I wish I had a photo of. It was at the dinner table at Martin's parent's house on the 24th.
(Here in Czech, we celebrate Christmas on the 24th with a big family dinner. After dinner, the children go into another room and return when they hear a little bell ring. When they return to the room all of the presents are under the tree to be opened!)
The girls in dresses, (which doesn't happen often), a beautiful set table, decorated tree behind the girls, candles lit. Before the soup was served, we were sitting at the table. I didn't want the moment to end. The girls were full of excitement and anticipation of the gifts to come. They seemed so old (4.5 and almost 3) and radiant. I can't explain it. I looked over to Martin's mom and she too was beaming. Delighted by the girls, having a full home and table, and to have Martin there. Last year, we had the same Christmas meal at the same table and we tried to pull together the joy and spirit - but the fact that Martin was in hospital loomed. THIS moment was different. The table was full. He was right beside me. Other things were looming.... but not this one. This year was exhausting for us in many ways, but we made it back here. To this table with family. With Martin.
I felt the same hope, expectation and potential that I felt in church a few weeks before. All of those, plus one more: contentment.

To všechno a ještě jednu věc navíc: spokojenost.

I wish I could say those feelings stuck with me throughout the week. Those were two fleeting moments. Honestly, it has been a painfully long 9 days of this last leg of Martin's treatment. Time could not  have gone any slower.  The girls have been home from skolka, which I thought would be fun...but we got sick. And the weather was terrible. (sorry for complaining) We made the best of it and the girls were great- it has just been lots of time inside.

This last treatment has been different. Although it is still the same arsenic treatment that Martin has been taking for 51 days... we are reaching our end. I really don't think we can take any more. Martin said yesterday has he was leaving for his last one before todays' test, 'I think my body can only take 51 of these.' I think our family can only take 51.  I remember saying the same thing after the first 30 days! My choice this last week has been to either do something purposeful, something connecting to my heart, like write letters, read, pray, exercise, even write this blog...all of which would lead to tears. OR watch movies, organize something, sleep or make something. So honestly, I have existed mostly in group 2. I have watched a lot of movies, slept and organized and have been crafty. I'm just too emotionally tired to go to group 1. I go there because I have to. I know I need to. But I would much rather watch Top Chef and work on a baby blanket for a friend's baby boy all day everyday.

There's not much to say about Martin's treatment, except that yesterday was his last one. And right now he is getting his blood and bone marrow tested. We should know the results in two days. Martin's body is a mess and he has been very uncomfortable. He is so weak and so sick. He tries to move past it and do normal things and 'be' healthy, but has to sleep before and after. He has had a sore throat for several days and couldn't speak, which is torture for Martin. I had the same sore throat which was gone in two days. Martin has had it for three weeks.

Nemáme žádné nové zprávy ohledně Martinovi léčby. Včera měl poslední kapání, dneska dává krev a vzorek kostní dřeně.

Yesterday was the one year anniversary of Martin returning home from the hospital. I can't believe it. I'm very emotional thinking about this year and the next.  Here's the virtual surprise party we (you) threw and here is the blog post from a year ago.

All in all, we are hanging in there. Not so gracefully, but we are living day by day.

Can I share a few prayer requests? I can think of 4.
1. That Martin's tests would show no cancer in his blood/bone marrow.
2. That we could have hope to pray for that. I have big hope, the Christmas-kind of hope in Jesus. But I'm scared to hope for Martin's health. It's too hard. I know they must be connected, the two hopes...I may not be able to. I think that's why it is so precious for YOU to hope and pray for Martin's health so specifically, when I can't. I've been struggling to look forward to 2013
3. My dear friend, and old Young Life leader (she's not old, just from a long time ago..18 years ago!), Jessel, wrote in Christmas letter to us, that she is praying for the sweetness of Jesus would be greater than any bitterness.... I think that is a perfect prayer for us right now.
4. Lastly, for the girls. They continue to take this all in and live in the reality of having a sick daddy. It is their everyday life. And it has been for a big fraction of their little lives. Pray that they will have little or big breaks from it. Maybe even a nice big break in 2013. One day they will fully understand how serious this is. May that process be gentle.

1.     Negativní výsledek testů – remisi.

Thank you so much.
I hope you each can celebrate this New Year is some way with friends and family or the quietness of your own home. Happy New Year!!

Všechno nejlepší do 2013!!

Happy New Years's and a belated Merry Christmas from the Hasik family!
It's been quite a year. We are so grateful to be surrounded by friends and family...even thousands of miles (kilometers) away. We hope that 2013 is simply the best year of your life- because of the peace, joy and hope that comes from closeness with Jesus!

once again.

As a joke, I was going to just post the same exact post from 12 December, with nothing added or changed.  Unfortunately, after the tests from this week, the results and information are almost the same.

from 12 DEC, with just a few small changes in red.
drobné odchylky dnešní zprávy oproti té minulé jsou červeně

"We got a call from the doctor this (afternoon) morning with results from Martin's blood and bone marrow tests. The cancer cells are still there in his bone marrow. They are still there. The doctor said that they are minimal, but still there.

Dnes (odpoledne) ráno nám zavolali z nemocnice ohledně Martinových výsledků testů krve a kostní dřeně.

Martin went back in to start the daily doses of the poison treatment this afternoon. He has to go for (9) 8 days. That is his (our) next countdown and then the doctors will see what's next.

Martin se tedy dnes odpoledne vrátil k obvyklé léčbě denní dávkou jedů. Musí proto  dalších (9) 8 dní chodit do nemocnice.

This is the season for countdowns and waiting. We aren't looking farther than 8 days. Even as I type this, I feel (very) disappointed but not devastated. I am certain that is from being held in prayer all around the world today. Thank you.

On one hand, not much has changed. We, especially Martin, are just moving forward and doing what we are told. Same as last week. We are doing our best to have hope, to trust, take one day at a time, not worry, and even be a little in the 'Christmas spirit'.

Na jednu stranu se toho moc nezměnilo. My, Martin zejména, jdeme dál a děláme to, co máme. Stejně jako minulý týden. S vypětím všech sil se snažíme doufat, věřit, nedělat si starosti, zvládnout jeden den za druhým a mít aspoň trochu vánoční náladu.

But something has changed. We have one more set of 'bad' test results. Three in a row, now. Martin has 8 more treatments behind him and 9 more in front of him. We are encouraged from week full great visits and meetings- a small Christmas party, visits from good friends and a prayer meeting for us at our Church. It also included an ear infection for Mia and some sleepless nights, which reminded me of last Christmas season.

To vše mi připomnělo minulé Vánoce.

Last year, Martin was in the hospital and Sofia was just getting over a few weeks of pneumonia. November and December were so full of sickness. I remember saying desperately to a friend, 'I just need to see one person get better in my home'. I remember it being sad and hard, but just so thankful that Martin was alive and was going to make it out. This year IS better. (I'm writing this to remind myself). Martin is HOME with us. Mia got sick, and now is almost back to normal- in a total of 3 days!

Loni byl Martin v nemocnici a Sofia měla několikatýdenní zápal plic. Listopad a prosinec byly plné nemoci. (Tohle píšu, abych to připomněla sama sobě).

and even though it seems like this has been a year full of bad news, not only in our house, but in the community of those around us, in Connecticut, all over....we have a little deeper understanding of sorrow, suffering and following Jesus through it all. I think we all do. All of you who have joined us in this, or who are also have heavy hearts for a million reasons, it is the perfect time to come together and celebrate the coming of hope and peace and joy. Not that it is coming, but that already God is with us, Emmanuel. This good news really does far outshine the bad news....even the horrendous news. Really. Truly.

I'm fighting for this perspective this week.

short reflection by Martin

Last week, Martin wrote a short paragraph for our Young Life Prague newsletter, and I thought that here would be a good place to share it as well. I love his perspective and the ways he is being challenged on many levels.

(If you aren't already on our newsletter list and would like to be, click HERE We would love to share with you about YL Prague a few times year and be connected in this way.)

Following Christ when it hurts - reflection on 2012

It is over a year since the diagnosis. God has not left me nor forsaken me. Neither was i guaranteed a save and rich long life that I enjoyed for 37 years, nor can I claim any entitlement for it now. As the life circumstances changed, He has not changed. My life was changed. My relationship with Him is growing stronger, the false idols are useless and worth dropping off. Not even money can buy the way out of cancer. Giving Jesus my life was a decision to submit to his leading into the ways of His kingdom, not the success in this world. Life looks different from the hospital bed. The line between life and death is thinner, but the ties with Him are stronger. Praying for healing. Praying for remission. Praying for becoming a better witness of the hope that I have through His love and grace. For the sick Jesus has something more.. Praise God for that!!

We just had two days of NO HOSPITAL and Martin enjoyed them a lot. Mia unfortunately has had a cough so we kept her home, but she and Martin have had a lot of fun. And he has taken Sofia to skolka both mornings which is a big WIN for everyone.

Hoping this treatment is almost over.

It's been over a month since Martin has been taking this rat poison treatment, alongside of his normal chemotherapy. It was supposed to have been over by now. A few days ago, we received some new results that showed that this treatment wasn't working, and that he would have to continue it through for at least another week.

It has been a long week....continuing to take something that you know hasn't worked yet is harder than taking something that you know is working. The side effects were also getting very uncomfortable, almost unbearable. On Thursday, martin had an unplanned meeting with the doctor, and learned that uncomfortable side effects were from the combination of two chemo therapies. Thankfully, as a result Martin 'only' has to take the poison treatment, no more morning and evening chemo pills. These past two or three days have been much more pleasant. We even went for a short walk with some good friends, Nina and Andre yesterday in Stromovka. I didn't think that would be possible at the beginning of the week!

But tomorrow, Monday, he will have a blood and a bone marrow test and we will see what the next step is. Hopefully, the numbers will show no bad cells and we can have a nice long rest from any kind of aggressive treatment. At this point, I have no idea what will happen if the results remain the same as this last week. I guess either continue this treatment, or something else.

I am trying to stay cool about it, but it's not easy. Martin isn't feeling well tonight. I think all of us, including the girls are a bit on edge. It is snowing so quietly and beautifully outside. I'm trying to wait just as peacefully.

If you have a few moments to think of us and talk to God on our behalf, ask Him for peace, real rest and patience. And not to lose hope, regardless of the results tomorrow.

We'll keep you posted. Thanks for EVERYTHING!!

Budeme vás informovat. Díky za VŠECHNO !!!

Thank you Filip Šimáček for the translation.

Acceptance

If I had to title this last month, it would be 'Acceptance'. Acceptance at gunpoint, maybe? Parts of this month have been terrible, but I can say that I am glad for my heart to have been taken on this road. It was time. If I could have chosen how it would have happened, I would have preferred to have go through this at my own pace, during some quiet moments with the Lord, maybe in the mountains or at the beach, reading a book about it or some scripture. Those would have been my plans...

Takové by byly mé představy.

A few days ago we passed the one year mark of Martin's diagnosis. A year ago, I started this blog to share our story with cancer. This past Friday, 30 Nov, Martin and I really didn't know whether to joke about it, celebrate it or cry. So we did all three. We laughed about it with our dear friends Mikey and Monika, celebrated the victory of surviving a year, and cried that it feels like it will never end.

A month ago, it felt differently. It seemed like we could live fine, relatively normal, lives with Leukemia. That it was 'ending'. We were all, especially Martin, feeling well. Our thoughts and prayers were going fast in every other direction far from sickness- friends, ministry, the future, our girls...normal life things.

Then with one phone call, God brought our thoughts and prayers, our hearts back into painful focus. Martin is still sick. I don't know why that reality hurts differently this time. It's been a year. Should I have been more prepared? On guard? Could we have been?

Jedním telefonátem nám Bůh naše myšlenky a modlitby přivedl zpět do bolestivé soustředěnosti. Martin je stále nemocný. Nevím jestli tato realita bolí jinak než předtím. Byl to rok.  Měla jsem být více připravena?  Více na pozoru?

I look back to last year and can remember the sheer adrenaline (result of millions of prayers) that got me through last December. Honestly, it is with exhaustion and heaviness that I sit and accept (or try to accept) all of this. Overwhelmed, extremely emotional and numb at the same time. Did I say tired?

Pohlcena, extrémně emocionální a zároveň znecitlivělá. Zmínila jsem unavená?

Martin has been the hero for taking this horrendous intensive treatment EVERY DAY. He physically has to sit and accept it. Accept that he is sick and receive the poison. I see the effects of it on him and the battle going on inside of him every morning. Not going is never an option, but it never gets easier to leave. He was really ill the first week, then had an OK second week and now he is really weak. He has 7 more days. Hopefully, whatever comes next does not include this treatment or going to the hospital so much.

Má ještě sedm dnů do konce.

I think I would have said a bit ago that we were 'getting used to it (cancer)'. In my mind, that was acceptance. But now I disagree with myself. 'Getting used to it' could be avoiding it, minimizing it, forgetting it, hoping it would die without attention....like all the herbs I planted in May.

Tonight, acceptance means to me holding the truth in my hands, looking at it, feeling the weight of it, talking about it to God using nice and not so nice words, and trying to reach the place of honestly being able to say that with whatever circumstance I am holding, ' It is well with my soul'. That because of Jesus Christ, the gift of God's love is so much greater than whatever is in my hands. It sounds absolutely crazy- even to someone who has heard it a million times. That it is possible to accept Martin's illness and receive perfect love of God at the same time....and have joy. The joy trumps the tears, and maybe is even magnified through them.

I'm definitely not there yet. But I am walking in that direction, together with God.
Here are a few snapshots of this journey for me these past few weeks:

*Kathy Usrey gave me a big hug, and told me, 'It will be ok'.

For those of you who don't know Kathy and Tiffany, let me take a moment and introduce you. Their family (Kathy and David and two of their children, Tiffany and David Jr.) moved to Paris a long time ago, maybe 9 years ago, to work with young international and French teenagers with Young Life.  I have had the privilege to get to know them- they have always been extraordinarily beautiful ladies.
A few years ago, a brain tumor was found in David Usrey, Kathy's husband. After surgeries and treatments, times when it seemed like he was going to be fine, a long fight with cancer, David passed away last March. March is only 8 months ago.

Kathy Usrey mě objala a řekla „Bude to v pořádku.“

Kathy and her daughter Tiffany (25 years old?) came to join our YL European conference two weeks ago, and stayed to be the speaker for our womens' retreat following the conference.  For several months, I knew they were coming. I couldn't wait to be with them and was terrified at the same time. I didn't know what they would really be like- would they be angry? Sad? A mess?

The minute they walked in the door, and I looked into Kathy's eyes, I wept. She and Tiffany were radiant. They would probably say 'yes', they have been angry, sad and a mess at times.
Kathy Usrey gave me a big hug and told me, 'It will be ok'.  If the absolutely worst happens (i can't type it) it. will. be. ok.  Not because Martin will be fine and everything will be better, and this will be behind us....but because of Jesus. And I saw that this IN Kathy and Tiffany. I got to spend a lot of time with them- and literally have pages journaled about our time together.

Ona i Tiffany byly veselé. Možná by řekly „ano“ v tom čase byly rozzlobené, smutné a rozervané. Kathy Usrey mě obejmula a řekla mi „Bude to v pořádku“.

*Tiffany Usrey led us in worship. I cannot begin to tell you how hearing her praise and thank God challenged and blessed me.

Tiffany Usrey nás vedla v chválách. Nemohu ani popsat jak mě její hlas a písně díky Bohu povzbudily.

*Kathy also said this sentence: The fear is worse than the reality. I could talk about this for a long time, but I will just say that this makes me angry at fear and once again thankful for the steadfast love of Jesus.

*My mind really for the first time has go to the 'worst case scenario place' and stayed there long enough to feel it.

*I have little warrior girls, who are so strong and sensitive at the same time. Sofia and Mia continue to amaze me with their understanding and concern and response to all of this.

*MY PARENTS WERE HERE FOR A MONTH!!! They had already planned to be here in November because of our conferences and childcare. Perfect timing. They served us, loved us, loved the girls, cared for us, lifted so many burdens during their visit....in practical ways and emotional ways.
Here's an example of a specific way: Martin felt better travelling home with someone on the metro,so on days when I couldn't go with him, my father would meet him at Karlovo Namesti and for some fresh air, they would walk across the river to Andel (15 minutes) and come home. It was perfect.  Thank you, Mom and Dad!!!!!!

Děkuji, mami a tati!

*There are few songs that are meaningful to my heart these days. These words and this truth are so precious to me right now

O Love that will not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.
O light that foll’west all my way,
I yield my flick’ring torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.
O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.
O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.

One last thing, I hope this doesn't sound depressing. Martin still may be fine. He probably will be and of course that would be amazing. I can't wait to celebrate years to come. It's just in my own walk with this that I am in this acceptance phase. Can't wait to move into party phase.
