hospital visit, 14 Dec

Sofia stayed home again from školka, so I wasn't sure if I would be able to go the hospital today or not. I spoke with Martin this morning and he said that he was feeling a little better and would be glad for a visit today. Once I saw that Fia was feeling better, good enough to stay with Nikola and that Mia was healthy, in a great mood and needed to get out of the house, we got everything set and were on our way.

I took Mia in the back carrier and she talked the ENTIRE way (I could understand maybe half of what she said). I couldn't wait for her to continue this conversation about the world with Martin.

We walked in and he had just woken up from a nap; we might have woken him up. He had slept through lunch. His left eye was almost completely swollen shut. And he had burning hives all over his forearms. These symptoms had appeared within minutes of waking up. Almost everyday he is receiving a lot of different blood transfusions and antibiotics. The doctor came right away and said that this was just an allergic reaction to a blood transfusion and they gave him some other drugs to stop the burning in his arms and cause him to fall asleep. He could barely keep his eyes open within a few minutes.

Vešli jsme do pokoje, když se Martin zrovna probouzel, možná jsme ho probudily my. Spal přes poledne, prospal i oběd.

Mia finished the gingerbread cookie she had taken from his stash of goodies, I sent some SMSes to cancel some of his visits for the afternoon and we said goodbye.

I stopped one of his doctors on the way out to ask about all of these side-effects and symptoms. The good news is that he is done with the chemotherapy treatment! Now they are continuing with this strong drug treatment called ATRA and are waiting for his body to start producing good levels of white blood cells that will mature. He is not there yet. He said that during the first 10 days of the treatment, which is behind us it was critical that there was no bleeding. Now his body will react in all sorts of ways and they will treat the symptoms to make him more comfortable...but it is a waiting game to see how long it takes for his immune system and blood tests to be more normal- normal enough to come home and finish this treatment as an outpatient. He said the 6-weeks term is just a guess, it could me much sooner or later. I could tell he was careful not to get my hopes up.

So the good news is that after this first phase of 10 days, it seems his body has responded well to the treatment. The bad news is that he could be very uncomfortable for a long time.

Please pray that he will not be in too much pain. For strength and comfort. For patience as his body heals. And of course, for healing and for this to be precious time between he and the Father.

  1. Sweet Jane,

Hang in there, friend. I love reading about your excursions with the girls, motherhood in the midst of such trial, etc. Your honesty is breathtaking and refreshing, and helps us know how to pray for you specifically. We ARE praying for you from the other side of the ocean-for all 4 of you. Keep trusting in His promises even when it feels like no one is there. He is. we are.

    Love,
    Lisa

  2. Love you Jane. Alana, my oldest (7 now) prayed for you at dinner tonight. You guys are loved, and are being prayed for. Thanks for sharing with us through this blog. The grief you feel is natural, and normal - May He comfort you in those times. "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those crushed in Spirit". Ps 34:18. Hugs to Martin and the girls, Jessel
