week one.

One week ago today, Martin went to the hospital for a few tests. While he was there he sent me an SMS asking for an overnight bag and that was it. That was the beginning of his hospital stay that will be at least 6 weeks. (later I will post a fuller version of the story)

Martin physically looks very different than he did day 1 and day 2. When he was admitted he had this terribly deep purple rash all over his body. His face and hands and feet, where the rash wasn't, had become a pale yellow-green. It is hard for me to even type this because I still have the image of him like1 this here in our home. This happened gradually and I honestly didn't realize how shocking or sick he looked until he was lying in his hospital bed among other cancer patients.

Martin vypadá fyzicky jinak než vypadal 1. a 2. den.

The doctors were able to diagnose him SO quickly. Which means they were able to begin treatment almost immediately. The very next day he received his first chemotherapy treatment along with the drug ATRA. He will have this pair every other day.

This treatment is said to be very effective and that it is very possible that after 6 weeks, Martin can come home and receive out-patient treatment. ALLELUIA! The doctor (who speaks perfect English) actually came in and said, 'Gratuluju vam!' (Congratulations!) when it was confirmed that he has APL Leukemia.

The first few days, I feel like Martin was concentrating on learning all of the hospital systems (he's never been admitted before), meeting all of the doctors and nurses, figuring out what he will need from the outside and how to make it practically in the hospital for such a long time.

His tooth extraction still ached, but he said that aside from great fatigue he felt physically the same as he had for the past few weeks. The main difference was the big emotional strain and beginning stages of dealing with our new reality. That he has Leukemia. That he will be in the hospital at least for 6 weeks- over the holidays, away from the girls and I, and with this thing inside of him that is making him so sick.

I have been able to see him every day so far, except for one. After the second chemotherapy treatment, I walked into his room and he looked (relatively) amazing. The rash had disappeared! And his color was returning. I know these are just external signs, but it makes a big difference just that he looked less sick. He really just spoke of being so incredibly weak and tired along with a few side effects of the chemo.

This has already been a life changing time for him, for us. I know it is because of the immense support we have received- prayer and practical, that has given him enough strength to say, 'Jane, this isn't unbearable. I can do this.' I know it's because he sees how people have come alongside of and have helped the girls and I SO MUCH already....and from encouragement from the Lord, such as Psalm 91:2, 'Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty,' or Malachi 4:2 'But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves.' (thanks Jenelle, for sending these precious scriptures)

Ja to dokážu.”

All this to say, that Martin is definitely hanging in there. So far there has been no complications. He is fighting this. He is so brave. The Lord is with him. This is a valley, not a pit.
