merry Christmas!

It seems like I don't really have that much to share these days- we are still just watching Sofia's sickness like a hawk to see when she can go visit Martin. And even more so, see when all four of us can be together. We can't wait for that moment. Last week was stressful here for the girls and I. I feel like I am still recovering from the emotional trauma of thinking Sofia would have to go into the hospital.

Now that my parents are here, in many ways, I feel like I can really rest, recover a bit and just be cared for. It is a wonderful thing, especially over the holidays. Martin's family hosted a special Christmas dinner. I loved being with them. What a great Christmas gift.

Martin's health seems to be slowly and steadily getting better. He hasn't had any infections or complications in over a week!!!! He is able to be 'unplugged' and leave the room, even go outside for small bits of time. If we were all 10o%, at least without pneumonia, he might have been able to come home yesterday for Christmas for a few hours (Czech Christmas is on the 24th)....but as sad as it was, it was just safer to stay in the hospital.

He has been fighting the fight in his body for the first half of his stay and now it is really becoming a mental or psychological battle. With different roommates, each with different stories, learning more about the 'could-have-beens' and 'what-if's' and lots of solitude time...he is learning, growing and being in challenged in so many more ways than fighting the cancer in his body. This may sound like an obvious statement, but this is changing him. He will never be the same.

I was able to see Martin for a long visit yesterday, after EIGHT days of not seeing him, and I can't explain the emotions running around inside of me. I have never felt more in love with him....not in Portugal as we were getting married, not in Paris when we were getting engaged, not in Munich when we were dating. I remember experiencing a similar feeling after each girl was born, like taking a step into deeper water.

The girls and I made him a Christmas tree out of their handprints cut out of tissue paper. I admit, I tried to control this art project and guide their paintbrushes and crayons....but it was impossible. And I'm glad. It's so much more beautiful the way they ended up doing it and you can see each of their personalities on the tree. I wanted to do something grand, extraordinary, and over-the-top creative. Some kind of video or play or painted canvas....but such a production just didn't fit. No one (especially me) had the energy to organize sick kids for something like that.

But this was perfect. and Martin really loved it.

This Christmas is not what I pictured it to be....but it doesn't change the fact that it still IS Christmas. We still celebrate the most amazing miracle, that God became a man. We still had, and are having special moments with family. Holidays mark a rythym in time. A cadence. As much as I wasn't very excited about the holidays this year, I'm glad they are here. I'll be glad when they are over. I know there will be more ahead, hopefully together with Martin.

Thank you all for joining us in this! I think of you; I know that many of you are having hard holidays as well. My heart aches for you. I pray that in the middle of it all, that you will have many moments of peace and JOY!

Irenka, thanks for the translation!!
